US attacks in Iran could reshape the battlefield in Ukraine and weaken Moscow

Within hours of American munitions falling on Iranian soil, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky He published a statement that was largely treated by the Western press as a diplomatic footnote, but which served as a signal that what was happening above Tehran had a direct impact on the ground in Ukraine.

President Zelensky has openly supported the strikes, calling Iran “Putin’s partner,” noting that his country has absorbed more than 57,000 Iranian-supplied drone attacks, and targeting Moscow: “Whenever there is American resolve, global criminals weaken. This understanding must also come to the Russians.”

Zelensky’s framing of War in Iran Through the lens of the war in Ukraine is no coincidence. Whatever Washington’s stated goals, the president, who has lived through the Ukrainian conflict since the 2022 invasion, recognizes that Iran has been an active partner in Russia’s war against Ukraine, and the United States has now moved against that partner.

By striking the Iranian regime that supplied Russia with Shahed drones (and the capacity to manufacture them) that have terrorized the Ukrainian civilian population for more than four years, Washington has eliminated a key Russian ally, which will negatively impact Russia’s ability to wage war in Europe.

When drones supplied by Iran began falling on Kiev in October 2022, reducing apartment buildings to rubble and plunging cities into darkness, the world quickly learned a new word: “witness.” The Shahid-136 is not a sophisticated weapon. It’s not fast (although Russian improvements have increased its capabilities significantly). It’s not quite as accurate as a cruise missile. What it is, and what it was always designed to be in Russia’s hands, is a weapon of civilian terrorism.

The Russian witness targets power plants and residential buildings. The devastation they reap contributes to power outages that leave families without light or heat in the winter. It is the triangular silhouette that Ukrainians have learned to fear in the night sky, and the distinctive low hum of its propeller that sends people running for shelters. I watched Shahid planes glide through Ukrainian airspace toward civilian targets. I stood with the interception teams in the dark, doing my best to shoot down the martyrs before they found their targets. Images of these drones flying over buildings in Kiev represent the human toll resulting from Iran’s harmful contribution to the war in Ukraine.

By early 2023, Iran had signed a $1.75 billion contract to purchase additional drones and complete manufacturing blueprints. Russia subsequently built its own production facility in Tatarstan. Ukrainian intelligence estimates that Russia is now producing up to 1,000 modified Giran drones per day using technology derived from Iran. In essence, Tehran handed over to Moscow the detailed blueprint for a terrorist campaign against civilians, which Russia has since manufactured on its soil.

Beyond drones, Iran has provided nearly $3 billion Ballistic missiles and surface-to-air missiles Before and during the invasion, including hundreds of Al-Fateh 360 ballistic missiles, numerous anti-aircraft systems, and hundreds of thousands of artillery shells, with a total weapons value exceeding $4 billion.

Iranian munitions have replenished Russian stockpiles, dashing Western hopes that Russia might quickly run out of missiles, drones and missiles. in contrast, Russia offered Iran the S-400 system Air defense systems, Su-35 fighter jets, nuclear reactor construction, and geopolitical cover in the UN Security Council. However, Russia’s most important strategic partner, China, continues to supply vast quantities of microelectronics and components to the Russian military-industrial complex on a scale that Iran cannot match. But Beijing has carefully avoided direct transfers of lethal devices to maintain a degree of deniability. Iran, on the other hand, has filled the gap that China deliberately left open: deploying front-line weapons and production blueprints without hesitation.

Russia has completely localized Shahed production, even improving the original design using more advanced and more expensive Geran variants. The legacy of terrorism left by the Iranian government for fifty years will continue not only in the countries of the Middle East, but also in Europe as long as the war in Ukraine continues.

With the US campaign promised to continue for at least several weeks, Iran’s ability to supply Iran with additional ballistic missiles is now at risk. Their ability to upgrade in-house drone designs and offer replacement components has deteriorated. Moreover, all of the Russian assets that could potentially be diverted to protect a stricken Iran – air defense systems, aircraft components, and logistics – are not available in Zaporizhia or Kherson. Moscow is now saddled with a weak and desperate partner at a moment when it cannot afford distraction.

This represents a different kind of pressure on Russia than sanctions or battlefield aid, one that works through the partnership networks and supply chains that have supported the Russian war effort. Zelensky’s prescient statement that every act of aggression ultimately meets a just response was directed at Moscow and Tehran. While Ukraine was not Washington’s primary consideration when President Trump decided to strike Iran, the calculus of war in Ukraine will become more complex for Russia, and that is a good thing for it.
