UK move to recognise Palestinian state is a diplomatic crowbar to revive peace process

Prime Minister Sir Kerr Starmer declares that Britain will recognize that the Palestinian state is a major change in foreign policy in the United Kingdom.
The presentation of recognition if Israel takes “fundamental steps to end the horrific situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire and adhere to long -term peace, and revive the possibility of a two -state solution.”
The immediate rejection of Israel to its statement means that the book of Starmer’s speech can start working now on what he will say at the United Nations General Assembly in September. The recognition in the United Kingdom appears to be “irreversible”, according to a senior British official.
Starmer will not expect to change British policy to produce an independent Palestinian state any time soon – from the perspective of many Israelis, will be the best time for that – but intention, diplomatic sources, is to enable moderate from both sides, Israelis and Palestinians. The British hope can increase them to believe that peace may be possible.
It will not be easy, not only because of the way Hamas killed about 1,200 people, including hundreds of Israeli civilians, and the hostages on October 7, 2023, followed by Israel’s retaliatory response that killed tens of thousands of civilians and left Gaza in ruin.
This is also because every attempt to make peace has failed. Years of peace talks in the 1990s ended in bloodshed. Every attempt to revive them since then has collapsed.
Israel’s refusal came minutes after Kiir Starmer ended up speaking at Downing Street. Later in the evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu published a very formulated condemnation on social media.
“Starmer is rewarding Hamas’s brutal terrorism and punishes its victims. A jihadist state on the borders of Israel today will threaten Britain tomorrow.”
“The recovery towards jihadist terrorists always fails. You will also fail. It will not happen.”
Netanyahu denies that Israel has caused hunger and disaster in Gaza. If he accepted Britain’s conditions to postpone it, his government would have disintegrated. It depends on the support of volunteer nationalist extremists who want to include the occupied lands and forcing the Palestinians to leave, not to give them independence.
But Netanyahu is not their prisoner. He built a profession that opposes a two -state solution, an idea that peace can be built by establishing an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. Earlier this month, he said that the Palestinian state would be a “launch platform” for more October 7 attempts to destroy Israel.
Netanyahu hopes for strong support for the American government. Its position is that recognition of the Palestinian state is now rewarding terrorism.
Donald Trump told the correspondents back to the United States after a golf comma in Scotland that he had not supported Britain’s move.
The question of Palestinian sovereignty can become another factor to dismantle the Atlantic relations.
Until the past few weeks, Care Starmer has not been convinced that the time was appropriate to recognize Palestine. But the pictures of Palestinian children in Gaza are starving to death. The last straw was after a lot of killing and destruction.
Downting Street and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stiffness, as well as in the Labor Party and on a wider scale in the United Kingdom.
Britain’s decision to join France to realize Palestine is another sign of increasing the diplomatic isolation of Israel. Two of its main Western allies, the United Kingdom and France, both members of the United Nations Security Council, rejected Israel’s attempt to prevent their recognition of Palestine when the General Assembly meets in New York in September.
In New York, immediately after a Starmer statement, David Lami, the UK Foreign Minister, obtained a large round of applause when he announced Britain’s decision at the United Nations Conference on a two -state solution and recognition of a Palestinian state.
He rejected the accusation that Palestinian independence could be a killer of Israel.
“There is no contradiction between supporting Israel’s security and its support for the Palestinian state. In fact, the opposite is true.”
“Let me be clear: The Netanyahu government’s rejection of the two-state solution is wrong-it is a moral error and is a strategic mistake.”
A British official said that the atmosphere was electric, as Lami told the delegates that the UK announcement had been issued “in the hands of history on our shoulders.” Lammy continued to go into the British imperial past in Palestine, which deeply intertwines with the roots of the conflict between Jews and Arabs to control the land that once ruled Britain.
Britain acquired Jerusalem from the Ottoman Empire in 1917 and the control of Palestine until 1948, exhausted and exhausted ideas to deal with what was then a comprehensive war between Arabs and Jews, and handed over responsibility to the United Nations and the left of Palestine. Immediately, the first Prime Minister in Israel David bin Gurion announced independence, and Israel defeated the invasion of the Arab armies.
At the United Nations, David Lami recalled how Arthur Balfour, his predecessor as Foreign Minister, in 1917, signed a letter written on the typewriter “Vision with preference in favor of creating a national house for the Jewish people.”
But the document, known as the Balfour Declaration, also stated that “nothing that might affect the civil and religious rights of non -Jewish societies in Palestine.” He did not use the word Arabic, but this is what is meant.
Lami said that Britain could be proud of the way it helped put the foundations of Israel, but the promise of the Palestinians, Lami said, was not kept, and this “historical injustice is still revealing.”
Britain’s conflicting promises feed the conflict and formed. The time traveler, which dates back to a century of Palestine in the twenties of the last century, will find tension and violence in a frustrating way.
The way the United Kingdom hopes to end misery in Gaza, create peace in the Middle East and treat the historical injustice that Lammy described is to revive the two -state solution.
He chaired the conference in New York, where France and Saudi Arabia were speaking. It has produced a seven -page document aimed at creating a path forward to revive the two -state solution, which includes condemnation by Arab countries in Hamas and its October 7 attacks on Israel.
It seems that the peace window through a two -state solution has been closed after the collapse of the peace process, which started with real hope in the 1990s.
Britain’s decision to recognize Palestine is the diplomatic violation to try to reopen it.
