The president will headline television rallies on On the eve of the elections In New Jersey and Virginia, they are the only states that hold gubernatorial races in the year following a presidential election.
The showdowns between the governors of New Jersey and Virginia typically garner significant national attention and are seen as a key gauge ahead of next year’s midterm elections, when the GOP will defend its razor-thin majorities in the House and Senate. This year’s election is also seen as the first major ballot box test of Trump’s unprecedented agenda since his return to the White House.
“Jack will make a great Governor, and has my complete and total endorsement,” Trump wrote Sunday night in a social media post while praising New Jersey Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli. “He will never let you down.”

Ciattarelli has narrowed the gap with his blue-leaning Democratic challenger, Rep. Mikie Sherrill New Jerseyis in the race to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy.
“We appreciate what the president is doing to excite the base, and we remind them that they have to vote, as all New Jerseyans do,” Ciattarelli told Fox News Digital on Monday after a campaign stop in this northern New Jersey district. “The future of our state is at stake. Get out and vote.”
While Democrats have long dominated New Jersey’s federal and state legislative elections, Republicans have been very competitive in gubernatorial contests, winning five of the previous 10 elections.
Five races to watch on Election Day 2025
While the president’s popularity and positive ratings remain underwater in New Jersey, Trump made significant gains in New Jersey in last year’s presidential election. He lost the state by just six percentage points, a significant improvement over his 16-point deficit four years ago. While Democrats still outnumber Republicans in the Garden State, the GOP has made significant gains in voter registration since Ciattarelli came close to upsetting Murphy four years ago.

The rally organized by the president by telephone in favor of Ciattarelli follows a similar rally a week and a half ago, on the eve of early voting. The purpose of the phone rallies is to help energize MAGA supporters, many of whom are low-propensity voters who often skip casting ballots in non-presidential election years.
Trump’s rally in New Jersey last month included automated calls to more than 180,000 people, encouraging them to join the rally and go out and vote.

“Republicans need to maximize every Trump supporter they can find,” Jesse Hunt, a veteran GOP strategist, told Fox News. “It’s been clear in the last several election cycles that there’s been a bit of a pushback among the president’s supporters and Republicans who haven’t cast ballots.”
Hunt, ex Republican Governors Association “In order to be successful in competitive states like New Jersey or Virginia, you have to make sure that every Trump voter who was there in 2024 will show up to vote,” the communications director said.

“In Virginia and New Jersey, remember this: A vote for a Republican means a big cut in energy prices,” Trump said in a social media post on election eve. “Failing to vote tomorrow is the same as voting for a Democrat.”
Trump’s Monday evening phone rallies come as the president also makes a final multimillion-dollar investment in Tuesday’s statewide elections in New Jersey and Virginia.
Fox News confirmed this weekend that Trump’s political team has pulled from the president’s massive political war chest, with New Jersey and Virginia each receiving nearly $1 million for micro-targeting efforts to vote.
“What I’ve seen in just the last couple of days is that the president and all of our Republican forces have committed more money to support our efforts to get out our votes because that’s where it’s going to come down to it,” Joe Gruters, chairman of the Trump-aligned Republican National Committee, said Saturday on Fox News’ The Big Weekend Show.
