“When you have states like Colorado and cities like Denver that have rolled out the red carpet and welcomed illegal immigrants, that’s the kind of thing you’re calling for more of,” he added. “That’s some of the downside to this policy.”

Since 2019, Colorado has enacted laws that limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, restrictions that Brauchler says undermine public safety.

“The result is that more criminals who should have been deported will return to our streets,” he said. “It’s a system that was intentionally created by those in charge of the state of Colorado, and this is the kind of chaos that ensues.”

The case has also drawn backlash from Republicans in the state.

Rep. Lauren Boebert called Parra Corral “another criminal alien welcomed into our state,” and blamed Democratic politics for the woman’s death.

“Colorado’s sanctuary policies welcomed this criminal alien to our state. Democrats are responsible for the death of a 27-year-old woman by allowing her killer to illegally enter our country,” Boebert wrote on X.
