‘Home Improvement’ star reveals diet and fitness secrets after weight loss

“If we go out, every now and then, I’ll have a steak, but I don’t eat steak very often because it’s too filling,” he explained. “And I think my metabolism is breaking down more slowly. But Chicken and fish at home. [His wife] Toddy doesn’t eat beef, so we don’t have to worry about that at home.”

They also like to make cowboy soup at home, “which is a whole bunch of stuff mixed with chicken and beans and tomato sauce, and I love that, and then we’ll have, every now and then, nachos,” Karen said.

If they eat chicken and vegetables one night, he said, “we’ll put the leftover chicken in nachos on Friday night, or, you know, whatever we decide to do on the weekend.”

“You need protein, you don’t necessarily need potatoes or rice, but you know, everything in proportion is good, as long as you stay in proportion,” he said.

Karen, who played Al Borland on “Home Improvement” from 1991 to 1999, recently sat down for a little interview with Tim Allenand Patricia Richardson and Debbie Dunning in Allen’s new show, “Shifting Gears.”

“This was a big thing for them to promote, bringing all these people back,” Karen said of the Oct. 1 reunion. “And I see Tim sometimes when we’re making an effort to play golf or have lunch or something like that. And I see Debbie a lot. I don’t see the kids a lot. I don’t see Pat a lot.”

However, Karn, Dunning and Richardson began to make agreements.

“This is kind of fun,” he said. “Well, we’re going to do one in Connecticut, and it’s a ’90s trick, because I think we were in the ’90s.”

Karen reflected on the show’s continued popularity more than 25 years after it went off the air.

“The producers did something very wonderful,” he explained. “They didn’t connect it to any time related to current events. I think the only way you can tell the time frame is probably hairstyles and clothes and things like that.”

He continued, “But for the most part, we’re just kind of anytime, United States of America. And that resonates because it all comes from the real reality of families connecting, co-workers connecting, and the one guy who wants to do everything and fails miserably but learns, and the other guy who knows how to do things but is kind of socially inept, and then you have kids growing up, and you have a wife, Pat, finding her way through school or a job. I think that resonates on a lot of different levels.”

Karen and his wife had just moved from New York to California and were pregnant when he auditioned for the movie “Home Improvement,” not for Borland’s part, but for potential future guest roles.

“I kind of asked her, ‘Do you know what time you were born?’ And she says, ‘I don’t know.’ And I said, ‘Well, ask your mom.’”

“Her birthday is coming up, and we’re having a party,” he said. Karen said the look on her face showed that was “the last thing I thought I was going to say in Zabar’s. And I just kind of burst into tears.”

The first thing she said was: “You know I don’t like cooking.” And I say: Yes, I know that. We will deal with this and all of that.”

She told him yes but then added: “You know, it wasn’t my birthday.”

He told her that, but she said she was born at 12:03, and he had proposed to her at 2:03.
