Estonia requested a consultation with other NATO members after violating Russian warplanes on Friday.
Estonia’s Foreign Ministry condemned the incursion as “rude.” She said that three Russian Mig-31 fighter planes entered the Estonian sky “without permission and stayed there for 12 minutes” on the Gulf of Finland.
A NATO spokesman said that the military alliance “responded immediately and objected to the Russian plane,” describing it, “another example of the reckless Russian behavior and NATO’s ability to respond.”
Italy, Finland and Sweden have scraped the planes under the NATO mission to boost the eastern wing. Russia later denied the violation of Estonian airspace.
The tensions between the NATO and Russia military alliance escalated last week, after both NATO members – both NATO members – said that Russian drones violated the airspace.
In response, NATO pledged to transfer military assets, including combat aircraft, east to strengthen defense.
Estonian Ambassador to the United States, Christagan Break, said that the Estonian airspace incursion was “dangerous”, and Russia tried to test NATO for some time.
“We believe that Russia wants to send a signal to NATO countries to focus on collective defense rather than Ukraine’s support in its battle,” he added.
The first hours of Saturday morning witnessed a allied plane that was deployed to protect the Polish airspace, as Russia fired air strikes targeting west of Ukraine.
At 05:40 local time (03:40 GMT), almost all Ukraine was under the alerts of the air strike in the wake of the Ukrainian Air Force warnings of Russian attacks and Russian missiles.
Estonia’s foreign minister, Margos, said that Friday, Estonian airspace was a “clear provocation” and called on NATO members to show unity in their response.
He said, “The violation is twelve minutes – a hard violation – from the airspace of NATO NATO needs a strong response at the political level as well as at the practical level.”
The Russian Ministry of Defense said that the planes were on “a scheduled flight … in a strict compliance with the international regulations of the air field and did not violate the borders of other countries, as confirmed by objective monitoring.”
He said that they flew over the waters of the neutral Baltic, more than 3 kilometers (miles) from Vendlo Island, which belongs to Estonia.
Speaking later on Friday, Estonian Prime Minister Christine Michel said his government “decided to request consultations in Article 4 of NATO” at an urgent meeting.
Michel said: “The NATO response to any united and strong provocation should be. We consider it necessary to consult with our allies to ensure common circumstantial awareness and agree on our next common steps.”
Article 4 of the NATO treaty officially begins with urgent consultations within the 32 -member coalition, which links the United States and many European countries together to collective defense.
This is the second time a week that a NATO member requested that Poland 4. Poland did this after Russian drones entered the airspace in the airspace.
US President Donald Trump told reporters that he was to be informed of the accident later on Friday.
He said, “I don’t like it. I don’t like it when it happens. It may be a big problem. But I will tell you later.”
Estonia’s Foreign Ministry said earlier that it had called the Russian charger “to save a protest” on Friday, while the European Union’s senior diplomat Kaja Callas described the incident as “a very dangerous provocation.”
The minister added that Russia has already violated the airspace in Estonia four times in 2025. Estonia shares limits with Russia to the east.
Estonia said that the plane entered the airspace from the northeast and was intercepted by Finnish aircraft on the Gulf of Finland. Once Estonian airspace entered, Jets Italian F-35, based in Estonia, was deployed as part of the police mission in Baltic in NATO to accompany the plane.
The government said that Russian aircraft had no flight plans, and they stopped their respondents and had no radio communication in two directions while monitoring Estonian air traffic.
“It was unprecedented that for 12 minutes, the Russians were in our air field,” Estonian Defense Secretary Hano Bevercor told BBC.
He added, “In this case, the only correct thing to do is get them out of the Astony airspace.”
Michel also said that the Russian incursion showed the war of aggression in Ukraine and did not go on whether the Kremlin had planned.
“The goal is to draw attention and help away from Ukraine by forcing NATO countries to focus more on defending their lands,” he added.
In a publication on X, Class, an Estonian citizen, said that the European Union “will continue to support our member states in strengthening their defenses with European resources.”
She said that Russian President Vladimir Putin was “testing the determination of the West. It should not appear weak.”
“We will respond to every provocation with a design while investing in a stronger oriental wing.”
“With the escalation of threats, as well as our pressure,” she added.
“Clear and practical steps” to increase the protection of the airspace over the eastern side of NATO in light of the incident on Friday.
“If we have to face the times we live in now, we will be very concerned,” he said, adding that the Estonians felt “designers” to defend themselves.

Last week, The Poland Army said it had dropped at least three Russian drones, With Prime Minister Donald Tusk, he says 19 drones, the Polish airspace has been logged in.
Russia has insisted that the incident was not intentional, and the Ministry of Defense said that there were no plans to target facilities on Polish lands.
Belarus, a close Russian ally, said that drones had accidentally entered the Polish air area after their navigation systems were disturbed.
After several days, The Romanian Ministry of Defense said it had discovered a Russian drone When two F-16 aircraft were monitoring the country’s borders with Ukraine, after “Russian air attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure on the Danube River [river]”.
The ministry said that the drone later disappeared in the radar.
Russia did not comment on this issue.
In response to Russia’s incursions into Poland and Romania, NATO pledged to transport forces and fighting aircraft east.
Both aircraft from the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Denmark participate in air defense missions on Poland in an attempt to strengthen the oriental wing of the coalition.
Bevercor said that NATO needs to “focus more on the eastern wing” and described it as “some of our joint response line, here in Estonia we keep the front door closing.”
On Monday, a French plane was stopped in response to another potential incursion by Russian aircraft aircraft. NATO said that the alert has ended quickly.
