Theia, an AI biomechanics company, has debuted a commercially available, video-only system that analyzes a bat’s trajectory and whole-body biomechanics together. This new approach works in real baseball environments and does not require reflective body markings, wearables or special equipment.

A new chapter in baseball biomechanics
Theia platform is based on deep learning models trained on millions of movement data points. It captures the entire 3D bat path, angle of attack, sequence and body movement in a single workflow that teams can run using standard high-speed video. This makes advanced biomechanics accessible to coaches and players who train in normal environments.

This is a game-changer for both applied research and development.”
Independent testing across over 2,000 swings showed average differences in bat plane angle of less than 3 degrees compared to marker-based systems. As a result, teams can evaluate roster-sized groups in routine cage or field sessions without slowing down players’ performance.
Why does video tracking only work in real baseball settings?
Many current tools rely on sensors or prostheses that can change the way an athlete moves. Markus Braun, CEO of Theia, explained to CyberGuy why video-only tracking is important.
“Using video only means teams get lab biomechanics data that previously required a full lab setup, but without special suits, reflective markers or devices attached to the racket or player,” he said.
The system works in the background once the cameras are placed and calibrated. Trainers record sessions as usual, and analysis is done automatically. For this reason, the training procedures remain the same, and the players move naturally.
Added Brown, “Until now, full swing analysis meant choosing between bat-only tools or biomechanics labs that couldn’t scale. Our new tagless technology has changed that. Teams can now see the full picture of each hitter using one system in an environment that matches their individual needs.”
How body and racket tracking AI improves player performance
Viewing the full swing allows coaches the opportunity to correlate body movement with club results. Brown described why this is important for player development.
“Theia’s new bat tracking feature helps players improve because it gives coaches a complete, more accurate picture of their swing. Many tools today either measure the bat or the body, and many rely on Wearable devices or sensors “It can affect how an athlete moves,” Brown said. “When coaches can correlate a player’s sequence, stance, timing and rotation to a bat’s path, speed and quality of contact, they can identify the specific movement patterns that drive results. This makes mechanical adjustments more targeted and easier to track over time, leading to more consistent and meaningful improvements.”

What players experience when teams use Theia
Players will not need to attach anything to the racket or their bodies. They swing into their normal training grounds without changing behavior. “For athletes, the biggest change is the level of precise, personalized feedback they receive,” Brown said. “Coaches can isolate whether the problem is due to sequencing, posture, timing, or how the hitter delivers the barrel to the ball. This level of detail helps translate mechanical action in the cage into more consistent and reliable results on the field.”
Independent testing shows consistent bat and body data
Driveline Baseball The PLNU x Padres Biomechanics Lab tested the system in both professional and university settings. “Our work with Driveline and PLNUxPadres’ Biomechanics Lab has shown that the system can provide high-quality bat and body data in the same environments that hitters actually train in,” Brown said. “What those tests showed is consistency: the ability to automatically capture the full swing, connect the bat and body with the precision necessary for player development, and fit seamlessly into a regular practice session.”
Why Thea System fits seamlessly into regular cage sessions
Sports technology can create friction in workflow, but Thea aims to avoid that. “We designed the system so that coaches can use it without changing anything about their normal training routine,” Brown said. “Once the cameras are in place, coaches simply record the session in the same way as they normally would, and the analysis is done automatically in the background.”
There are no extra steps, no equipment placed on players, and no interruption to training.

Brown believes this breakthrough paves the way for Future innovation.
“Player development is ultimately about understanding what drives performance, and this technology gives coaches a much clearer way to see that,” he said. “When you can link a player’s movement to swing outcome with objective, repeatable data, you can build more individualized and accurate training plans.”
He also added: “This work is based on more than a decade of research and more than 50 peer-reviewed validation studies focused on tracking human markerless movement with high accuracy. It reflects the trend in which the field as a whole is moving toward integrated markerless solutions that give athletes and coaches clearer vision with much less friction.”
