Hudson and Oliver were raised primarily by her mother, Hawn, and her partner of 43 years, Kurt Russell, 74, whom the actress has publicly described as her father figure.
“I lost, and it all happened so fast,” Hudson recalls. “My dad just turned to me — he was behind on work, and Kurt said, ‘Congratulations, now you can have a career.’ “And I was like, ‘Yes, that’s right.’ And that was Kurt’s way of saying, like, ‘Hey, this is it.’ Everything happens and in a second it’s all over.”

While speaking with Feinberg, Hudson talked about her status as the queen of romantic comedies and how she approaches projects in the genre.
“I think it’s one of the hardest genres to get right,” Hudson said.
She explained that when she stars in romantic comedies, she sets out “with the intention of everyone making a great movie, not with the goal of making a romantic comedy.”

Hudson shared that although romantic comedies were the basis of her fame, she strives for roles that allow her to change and challenge herself, noting that being widely known for romantic comedies has sometimes made it difficult for filmmakers to see her in different types of roles.
“It was clear that this was where the industry would love to hire me, so my goal, I hope, was to make the best versions of them,” she said. “At the time, it was like there were a lot of factors: you have your team, there are people who say: ‘We really think you should do this, these are great directors.’ And then you have moments where you also say: ‘This is a lot of money and I’m a single mother.’”
Hudson continued, “And despite working with some great filmmakers and having big hits, I started to feel like I really wanted to do something different. And I think when you get really famous in a genre, it’s hard for some filmmakers to see you in anything other than what we’re seeing. That kind of thing like, ‘Well, transformation isn’t what you do,’ when in fact it’s what I like to do.”
She went on to explain that “Song Sung Blue” gave her that opportunity and felt like the beginning of a new phase in her career. The actress also received nominations for Golden Globe AwardThe BAFTA Award and Actor Award emphasized that her choices do not depend on awards, but rather on stories that move audiences and challenge her as an artist.

Hudson had previously embarked on Music careerShe released her debut studio album “Glorious” in May 2024, which charted on the Billboard Heatseekers. While speaking with Feinberg, Hudson recalled that she had long wanted to pursue music but was warned that it could jeopardize her acting career.
“I always thought music was going to be something I was going to do, but then it was like, well, don’t break what’s not broken, and the idea of that kind of crossing careers would have been the kiss of death,” she said. “You’re kind of warned against it, like ‘just enjoy your career, enjoy this part now.’
Hudson recalled feeling particularly frustrated after telling someone she wanted to make an album when she was in her 30s.
“They say, ‘You’re kind of too old now to break out as a musician or have a music career,’” she recalls.
“He wasn’t wrong,” Hudson admitted. “It affected me. Eventually, coronavirus happened, and I thought, ‘I’ll regret it if I don’t do this.’ “I have to do it.”
“So I did it, and afterward I couldn’t believe the reception I got,” she recalled. “It was so warm and loving and cuddly. I thought, ‘Why haven’t I done this before?’
