One of the most famous phrases in the history of cinema is “There’s no place like home” from the classic American film The Wizard of Oz. Decades later, that statement still rings true for a little girl in Kansas and the thousands of others who will enter the White House to see this year’s Christmas decorations that the First Lady said. Mrs. Trump demonstrated once again how thoughtful and respectful she is of the traditions of the White House and the residents who came before her, while not being constrained by them with confidence and elegance. She left her unique, distinctive and timeless mark as First Lady throughout the Christmas theme inspired by her own life experiences of motherhood and work, saying: “This Christmas, let us celebrate the love we carry within ourselves, and share it with the world around us. After all, wherever we are, we can create a home full of grace, sunshine and endless possibilities.”
Since the earliest days of our republic, presidents and first ladies have always welcomed people to the White House, and the holiday season is certainly the most special time to do so. This year, the route will be a little different to accommodate the construction of the hall, but that hasn’t stopped Mrs. Trump from hosting time-honored traditions like Halloween at the White Housepardoning the Thanksgiving turkeys, and now Christmas receptions and tours.
For more than half a century, since the days of the Kennedy Administration, First Ladies have coordinated the decor of the magnificent tree prominently placed in the Blue Room with a theme of their choice that reflects their personal taste and style. Over the decades, the design has become more extravagant, but the reflection of what is important to the First Family has remained consistent.

To highlight their personal patriotism, Mrs. Trump designed the historic Blue Room this year to honor Gold Star families. This colorful 18-foot Michigan spruce is decorated with gold star ornaments as well as beautiful custom ball ornaments representing the official flower and bird of each U.S. state and territory, a custom first started by First Lady Pat Nixon.

The annual gingerbread house practice, also started by Mrs. Nixon, has always been a favorite in the State Dining Room. “It’s edible, but you can’t take a piece with you,” said Nick Clemens, the first lady’s spokesman. An important message, as a Time correspondent wrote in 1973: “A child from the embassy stood in awe of this creation, reached out, broke off a piece of the front, and put it in his mouth.” At some point it became necessary at children’s parties to staff a Marine with a “giant cookie” because the social assistants were not fast enough and by 1977 two were deployed, one on either side.

A hallmark of Mrs. Trump’s Christmas decorations over the years has been the presence of elements from her BE BEST initiative in the room’s decor that are brilliantly displayed this year, in the Red Room. While the Green Room is filled with decor to inspire family fun this holiday season, it includes beloved portraits of both Presidents Trump and George Washington made entirely out of Lego bricks (each image is made up of over 6,000 pieces).
The continuation of President and Mrs. Trump’s patriotism and American decor is evident in the East Room, the largest room in the White House, hallowed by images of Martha and George Washington. Includes Golden Eagle tree toppers, and adorable tree stands that feature The official logo of the American 250and stars, roses and oak leaves to mark the upcoming semicentennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The trees are also united by the brilliant colors of old glory that wind through their branches.
From First Lady Nancy Reagan’s beloved cranberry tree newly reimagined in the Red Room to Pat Nixon representing all the states and territories with newly designed ornaments on the Blue Room tree, no tradition was too small to overlook and yet it was presented in Mrs. Trump’s beautiful way.

Herve Pierre, Mrs. Trump’s longtime friend and advisor, who designed both of her inauguration dresses, was also asked to use his meticulous attention to detail to oversee the execution of her creative designs, as well as to create the tour’s annual souvenir booklet, which is particularly striking this year. Pierre, along with the wonderful White House Executive Residence staff and volunteers from around the country who came to put up the decorations, have created a Christmas of which all Americans should be especially proud.
Shortly before President John Kennedy’s term tragically ended in November 1963, Mrs. Kennedy He was asked to contribute a brief introduction to “The Presidents’ Christmas Story”, an article written for Look magazine. Mrs. Kennedy’s words seem particularly timely this year, not only because of the events that have transpired, but also with Mrs. Trump’s theme of focusing on home, family, and “America’s character inside the House.”

“This season the lights of our trees and homes still point to that ancient promise of Christmas — the end of all wrongs, the fulfillment of old hopes. This article tells the story of Christmas in the White House. But although the White House is often the center of national attention — a public building — during the Christmas season it is the home of an American family who shares in the anticipation of the joy of this festival. the world for many years.”
Home is truly where the heart is, and Mrs. Trump’s commitment to keeping the White House open during renovations serves as a subtle reminder that her heart and focus remain on welcoming as many people as possible from around the world to visit and experience the People’s House, especially this Christmas season. Because even though it is her temporary home, she knows that it belongs to the American people.
