Phil Lack, director of the economics program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said he expects a result that is “relatively simple, relatively ambiguous” and “not spectacular.”

“I think, overall, we and the Chinese have started a lot of small fires over the last few months, and we’re going to basically put out a few of them,” he told CNBC.

The meeting — the first between the two leaders face-to-face since Trump reclaimed the White House and began his trade war with China — is scheduled to begin late Wednesday Eastern time, Thursday morning local time in Busan, South Korea.

The bilateral meeting is the last item on Trump’s agenda before his return to Washington, D.C., at the conclusion of a five-day, three-nation tour across Asia.

“I expect to lower that because I think they’re going to help us on the fentanyl issue,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. “They will do what they can do.”

But when asked what China was doing to justify eliminating tariffs on fentanyl, Trump did not provide any details.

“Well, I think they’re going to do things that, you know, they have an industry that has to do with drugs,” he said. “Fentanyl has other reasons to be there, and we have to get rid of it. We have to stop it.”

When a reporter pressed for clarification on whether China would assist U.S. law enforcement with fentanyl — and if so, how — Trump offered little.

“China will work with me, and we’ll do something, I think, I mean, look, we should have the meeting, our meeting tomorrow. This is a big meeting, and fentanyl will be one of the things we’re discussing,” he said.

He added: “The important thing is that we will discuss the issue of farmers. We will discuss many matters.”

Trump did not clarify how farmers would factor into the discussions.

Trump also indicated, in those remarks, that he was unlikely to raise the Taiwan issue with Xi, saying: “I don’t know that we would even talk about” the self-governing island.

“I’m not sure. I mean, he might want to ask about that. There’s not much to ask,” Trump said.
