Mystery surrounds Russian mum and children found in Indian cave

The police in India are trying to collect the story of a Russian woman who was found living in a cave in the southern state of Karnataka with her two young daughters.

Nina Coutina was rescued on July 9 by the policemen who were in a routine patrol near the Ramtra Hill in the Jokarna Forest, which borders the tourist paradise in air.

The authorities say that the 40 -year -old and her daughters – six and five years – do not have documents suitable for staying in India. They were offered at a detention center for foreigners near Bangaluru, the state capital, and they will be deported soon.

Coutina defended her lifestyle in two video interviews with the Indian News Agency, saying that she and her children were happy to live in the cave and that “nature gives good health.”

But even after a week of finding them, there is little clarity on how women and their children are in a forest affected by snakes and wild animals; How long have they lived there and who are really.

“The area is popular with tourists, especially foreigners. But it has many snakes, and they are exposed to landslides, especially during the rainy season. To ensure the safety of tourists, we started patrols last year,” said M, Nariyana, the police director in the Outara Canada area.

“The woman and her children looked very comfortable in the place,” said Mr. Nariyana. “It took some time to persuade her that it was dangerous to live there,” he added.

The police said when they told her that the cave was unsafe because of the presence of snakes and wild animals in the woods, I told them: “Animals and snakes are our friends. Humans are dangerous.”

Coutina and her daughters were transferred to the hospital for an examination after their rescue and were approved to be medically fit.

An official at the BBC Regional Registration Office (FRRO) told her that she was Russian and that she would be returned to her homeland as soon as the procedures are completed.

He says they have contacted the Russian consulate in Chennai – BBC also wrote to the Russian embassy in Delhi but they have not yet received.

In video interviews with Ani and PTI news agencies in India, Coutina said she was born in Russia but did not live there for 15 years and traveled to “many countries, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Bali, Thailand, Nepal, and Ukraine.”

The police said they told them that they were living in the cave for a week. They added that she bought some vegetables and groceries, including a famous brand of instant pasta, from a local store, a week ago.

They said that she told them that she had arrived in the state of Karnataka from Jwa, where she also claimed that she had lived in a cave. She also said that one of her daughters was born in the Gawa cave.

In her interview with PTI on Wednesday, she complained of the detention center where she was presented with her daughters saying, “It is like prison.”

“We lived in a very good place. But now we cannot be alone. We cannot go out. Here is very dirty, and there is not enough food,” she added.

It is not clear when and how Coutina came to India.

Police say they told them that she had lost her passport, but they were able to find an expired passport among her property, which showed that she came to India with a work visa that was valid from October 18, 2016 to April 17, 2017.

But she exceeded, she was arrested a year later, and issued a Goa office in the fur “exit permit” to leave India. According to the stamps of immigration in her passport, she entered Nepal on April 19, 2018 and left after three months.

It is not clear where she went after, but Coutina told Ani that she “generally traveled to at least 20 countries” – at least “four of them since she left India in 2018”.

It is also not clear when she returned to India after that, although some reports say she has returned since February 2020. PTI told it that she had returned because “we really love India.”

Coutina admitted that her visa ended a few months ago. She said, “We do not have our visas, a valid visa, our visa has ended,” adding that the separation happened because it was sad for her dead son and could not think of anything else.

She added that she had a “great experience to stay normal, in the woods” and insisted that her daughters were happy and healthy there. The cave it chose was “very large and beautiful” and was “very close to the village” so that you could buy food and other necessities.

Coutina also rejected the suggestions that her children live in the forest.
